Keeping Rabbits away from hedge

i thought i'd share some good news, after tearing my hair out looking for a solution to keep rabbits away from my newly planted hedge, i tried 'wrights' soap (really smelly stuff). It worked !!!...I was thrilled.

You can buy it in dunnes or tesco...use a pototo peeler to break it up into small bits a shake around the edge of your hedge...they hate the smell and have not come near it since, its finally beginning to thrive :)

Wrights use tea tree oil in their soap, they used to use coal tar but its not allowed now. Perhaps a simple tea tree soap would do the job?

Its called Wrights Traditional Soap btw.

Are you sure? Not allowed in this specific product or not allowed generally? I was sure that there are a few shampoos still on the market that use it. E.g. T-Gel maybe?
 
Positive, I used to make Wrights soap! Its not allowed in the soap, but it is in T-Gel, and certain other products.

Coal Tar was stopped from use as it was a possible carcenogenic.

As European Union directives on cosmetics have banned the use of coal-tar in non-prescription products, the coal tar derivates have been removed from the formula, replacing them with tea tree oil as main anti-bacterial ingredient. Despite this major variance from the original recipe, the new soap has been made to look and smell like the original product, despite differing substantially in composition.
 
OK but see [broken link removed] for Neutrogena/T-Gel website - which is definitely still on the market.

However it mentions "coal tar formulation" - there may be a subtle difference.
 
There must be a difference alright, I remember Wrights had to change their packaging as they couldnt call it Coal Tar anymore, and replaced it with Tea Tree Oil.

Don't really know the specifics!

I've got a battery operated electronic device (€55 in B&Q, cheaper online) which project an infra-red beam. Once an animal (it applies to cats, dogs, foxes, deer, etc.) breaks the beam, the device emits a sound which detters them. Humans can't hear the sound so it's not intrusive. The box also states that the sound is uncomfortable but not harmful. I use it to keep our dog out of flowerbeds and it works a lot better than trying to talk to him :D.
 
I wonder would this device work on rabbits? If it works on rabbits we would be very interested. We have been having a big problem with rabbits 'feasting' on our shrubs!!!
 
As a side issue, if it is tea-tree oil that is a deterrent, does anyone know a way it could be sprayed? I am presuming that it is not going to mix in water (being an oil and all!), but is there some other base that could be used?

Otherwise I plan to reduce it a bit in cooking oil and paint it on to the things I want to protect.
 
You'd need a carrier oil alright. I guess because tea tree is so strong smelling, you wouldnt have to worry about trying to get an unfragranced oil, cooking oil would be fine in this instance.
 
Have you considered getting an accountant? rabbit's seem to have an aversion to them. Not cheap by any stretch of the imagination, but highly effective.

In similar vein, I was thinking of getting a FF TD, but I think they only work for Pet Rabbites...
