Hi thereI hope someone can help. We're living in a 1930s house with some nice old stained glass in the hall window and the top of the windows in the front bay. We're replacing all our windows soon (timber, double glaze), and want to retain / incorporate the old glass. The bay windows are currently PVC, and the panes with the stained gass are not double glazed. The halol window is in the original timber, and again, single glazed. We've not had much success in finding someone who's done this before, though I'm sure it's been done. Can anyone advise??Thanks,RS

You need to go to a local joinery workshop, any of the bigger companies won't want to even hear of it. It should'nt be to much trouble.

You could enquire from a stainedglass specialist if the glass could be put into a double glazed unit at this stage.

I know if I was doing a project like that for someone I would suggest to them to have a stained glass professional to have a look at the glass and to make sure that it will come out ok from the existing window. I would also ask the customer to get the stained glass people to give you the glass size in order to make the new window and that the stained glass specialist would remove the glass from the old window and transfer it into the new window.

As it is very old it will be very frail and the glass will have become brittle.

It will be well worth the extra bit of work as it is a feature on your home.

I'd agree - your 1st port of call should probably be a stained-glass window specialist.

We used one a few years back to restore similar glass in our front door: unfortunately I can't remember their name or details, apart from the fact they were based in Rathfarnam.

You may end up having to go single pane for the stained glass sections, but again, I'd get professional advice.

The actual work of remounting the glass is straightforward enough for someone who knows what they're doing: as far as I recall it wasn't that expensive, and well worth doing to keep the character of the windows.

Thanks for the advice.Any recommendations on Stained Glass Specialists we could use (Terenure)?I read a good review of Rathmines Glass on these pages a while ago. Are there others around?RS

I'm slightly reluctant to mention them, only because I'm not 100% sure they're the same company we used. They are a stained glass specialists though, and they are based in Rathfarnham (which is definitely where we had ours done).

If they are the same company, we were very happy with them, if they're not I guess you'll have to take your chances! No harm in talking to them either way.

In case it's not obvious from all of the above, I've no connection with this company, other than being a satisfied customer (maybe!).

Hi Ruth. Did you manage to get this done successfully. I am in the exact same situation.
