Judgements - can they be avoided longterm

Does anybody know if a judgement (non payment of unsecured debt - mortgage) can be avoided by simply leaving the jurisdiction and not returning until it has expired (6 years) or can they just deliver to the last point of contact with you like an email address or a parents address etc?

Basically, does a judgement have to be physically delivered into your hands like we see on tv?
