I read yesterday that there is a hard date cut off of 31 March for joint assessment for that year.

This was news to me.

I normally do a tax return every year via ROS, Form 11. I can't see in ROS where I would make the relevant declaration. Anyone been through this ?

Thanks in advance.

Don't you do this via myAccount?
You can update your civil status and request joint assessment through ‘Manage My Record’ or ‘My Profile’ in myAccount. You can also upload any supporting documentation. Your spouse will be required to confirm the request by signing into myAccount and confirming the status update.
I thought that the March 31st deadline applied to changing the assessable spouse?

How to select an assessable spouse or nominated civil partner

You can decide which of you is to be the assessable person.

You can do this by:
You must do this on, or before, 31 March in the year you want the selection to apply.

Thanks I'm not registered on my account only ROS. I'm looking for a way to do it on ROS.

I understood it was both electing to be jointly assessed and who does the returns

The same 'manage my tax' options are on ROS as myaccount as far as I know.

Are you separately assessed now?

I can see on the form 11 return I have the drop down option to do the return based on joint assessment and I am registered as married. Is that enough?

Rang revenue and was told you need to fill out a paper from and send it in by the 31.3.
No online facility to do this. The official guidance is a little misleading.
Might help someone else down the line.

Thanks for all the engagement
