Joint assessment recommendation

My wife and I have been jointly assessed for quite some time now, easing tax return filing Recently, she's become a sole trader, but we're still jointly assessed. As we're coming up to the end of the 2008 tax year, is there a recommendation on whether a separation of tax returns makes more sense than being assessed together for 2009?

(We have used an accountant for interim filings and VAT receipts etc)

It really is a personal choice as either way you won't loose out. Only difference it will make, if under separate assessment you can make your end of year claim on receipt of your P60 i.e for medical expenses etc., and have refund sent to you directly rather than waiting for her tax return to be prepared and refund due being off set against her liability
