Friend was in full time work in private industry until June 2025. Then took some time away due to personal issues.

Since December has been working a substitute teacher on a casual basis. Just a day here and there. Less than once a week from December to March
Since April this has become more regular (2-3 days a week).

This week she applied for jobseekers benefit (for days not working ) but was denied for not having a substantial loss in income.
They compared her income from December to now saying there was actually an increase in income.

Is this correct?
Can she appeal highlighting the income from June and showing a substantial drop in income? Or is there a specified time period that this substantial drop must occur.

Thanks - have gotten great advice here before

So assuming this work will cease totally in June/July for a while at least. At that point she should go in and sign on as totally out of work. She should get her 9 months. In September if/when the work returns, in the similar vein, she needs to go into SW office and say she has casual work, not part-time work, not contract - the word casual is important here. She will then be allowed work at short notice a few days a week and still get her entitlements for the days she does not work. She will add the work days during the week online so that her payment can be adjusted accordingly.
Note: The SW personnel are not very aware of this type of employment as it's unusual so you need to stress that you are not part time but casual. See here for job class description.
