Hello All,

First of all, Happy New Year to all ABM members. I would like some info on the following situation:

I am 28 yrs old and work for a company who offeres hardware support for Dell. A change is def. needed, as I am in this job for two years now. My education background is Cert in Manufacturing Technology and have done the A+ and Net+ exams. I would like to get more involved with software \ IT support. My question is what would be the next step for me, would it be the Microsoft MCSA or something completely different. My current salary is 32K so I cant really start below that as I have just moved house.

Any help on my next career \ education path would really be appericated.

Thanks,
James.

It's a really good time to be looking for IT work - employers just can't get the staff.

Have you tried applying for support roles?

What county do you live in?

This might be of use: [broken link removed]=

Just play around with the advanced search feature to search for keywords you're interested in.

Thanks for the info Flax, what about further education, what would you recommend on that front?

I work in IT myself. I actually sit in a cubicle next to the support department :)

None of the support people here would have MSCE or Cisco qualifications of anything like that. However they support our own software product only.

I get the impression you want to be doing more general support? Are you more interested in Windows or Unix? Personally I prefer Unix so I'd be more interested in RHCE courses rather than MCSE ones...

Yeah, I want to get away from the whole Dell factor so a general support job would be great. I got a present of 3 microsoft books last year which I believe would equal a MSCA qualification once I pass the exams.

I am going to get of my lazy ass and do them anyway. I prop would stick to windows based software but I am open to everything and anything. I feel that now is the time to expand my education before it gets to late for me:)

You could also do a degree part-time at night? Your future employer would probably help fund this. I'm currently doing my masters at night and I love it.

Do you have any coding skills? For example, this job -

- requires people with coding skills. I have seen lots of support jobs with requirements like this.

Basically what I am trying to say is that getting a broad understanding of technologies would be beneficial.
