thats the thing there is a shortage of mechanics because with the buoyant jobs market many leave the trade and take up a "clean hands" job with multinationals etc, their practical and technical skills are actually widely in demand. Also with cars getting so complex with software etc and previously simple things like changing a bulb or even an oil filter becoming a major task. You were right to bite your tongue and hold your nerve because it would have been even more difficult to get another mechanic complete a job already started with parts etc removed. What if there were bits lost or removed incorrectly no mechanic would take the blame or responsibility for another guys potential bad workmanship.

Strangely enough when paying for the work we got chatting and he told me his other half was at a some sort of jobs/trade fare on the SIMI stand trying to entice young people into the motor trade
Was also behind a bus on Tuesday where Dublin bus were advertising to hire mechanics with a starting salary of €50k
To me that's a fairly decent starting wage that would take some college graduates a decade or 2 to catch up with earnings wise if they even do with lots of potential for continuous employment growth

Yes the jobs market has changed over the last 2 decades, anyone with practical and technical skills is now in high demand and can't be replaced by AI. On the other hand though with the advent of the WFH phenomenon desk based jobs have also become more desirable. Therefore you have to pay trades people and mechanics alot more money to equalise because they have to commute to work every day to their workplace. Although established mechanics can set up at their own house if they have room.

As for dublin bus looking for mechanics, i think working on trucks or buses is a difficult enough job for a mechanic especially if called out to a breakdown in the field rather than routine maintenance in garage
