Is this a scam? Text from Revenue.

I have received a text message purporting to be from Revenue.ie claiming that I am entitled to a tax refund of 820 euro. Upon clicking the link provided I am requested to provide my full details including name, address, debit card and bank account details. I have no idea for what reason I would be entitled to claim any such money.

Well the revenue themselves warn that it's a scam.

The Revenue Commissioners never send unsolicited text messages.

Well, they do send two factor authentication codes by SMS from "Revenue.ie" to log in online.

And I have received SMS to notify of profile changes.

Yes, I deleted it so can't remember what it was. But it was official sounding.

There are a few previous examples on the Revenue page that I linked to. Usually careful examination of the URL will show that it's dodgy even if it looks plausible at a glance.

One way to check if a domain is suspicious, is to go on the whois website and input the domain, if it was registered very recently, it's probably a scam.

For example: https://www.whois.com/whois/askaboutmoney.ie - shows that was registered in 2007, so I think it's fairly legit

Never ever provide PPI details on a link received in an SMS / Email... especially one received out of the blue... always verify first
