I'm going to New York in Oct and considering buying a laptop over there for use here. Will there be any difference in connections or anything else I need to consider? Is it much cheaper over there?

Any feedback greatly appreciated!

Yes, up to 55% cheaper. Dell have (like here) a lot of sales. One I got at Christmas in Boston cost $460 .......... as far as I know they were going for about $950 here. Go figure! As regards connections etc ....... no probs.

Oops! You don't have dedicated Euro and Sterling keys. Forgot about that. But, as in everything, you make do. Mind you, I only use it for news, sport, eMailing, video and music.

Yeah - the keyboard issue is not a showstopper in my opinion (I've managed to live with it and the money saved was some comfort too :D) but just thought I'd mention it.

you can reset the keyboard to european when you set the language just pick UK english then you get the euro by pressing ctrl alt and 4 . I got one in Florida last year. Saved a fortune no probs with software or anything just had to change plug.

Mains lead - you can source an alternative here or use a 2-pin to 3-pin adapter.
Or just snip the US 2 pin plug off and wire on an Irish 3 pin one. Unless you will travel a lot in which case adaptors are a better idea.

Yes - but my point in the other thread was about other characters which were not readily (or at all) accessible using the Irish keyboard configuration thus necessitating on the fly switching to US mode as required.

I'm typing now on a laptop I bought in Best Buy a month ago...I saved a fortune! Buy two if you can! (The only risk is that the warranty won't be valid outside the US...turn the computer on before you leave the US to mak esure its OK)

That's not generally true!!!
I bought an Apple notebook a few years ago, while in the US, and it came with a full world wide warranty. Best to check the warranty coverage before you make a decision on which notebook to buy.
