Is it the owner of the tv or the house owner is liable to pay the licence?

Re: TV Licence

Would this be a rented house situation? The person who has use of the set should pay the bill, the below is from the TV licening website

"Any person in occupancy at an address where a television set is held is legally responsible for the licensing of the television set regardless of ownership of either the premises or the set itself."

Re: TV Licence

Strictly speaking, neither have sole responsibility. TV licences are per residence not per TV so it is the occupants collectively that are responsible for any TVs on the premises. Although they normally chase whomsoever gives their name.

So if there are two people, one owns the place and the other rents and the person who rents has their own television both occupants are responsible for ensuring that the TV is licensed and either can be held responsible for not being able to produce one on request.

Re: TV Licence

Thanks for your good clear replies. Yes its a rental situation.

Re: TV Licence

This is the sort of situation that should be covered in the rental agreement

Re: TV Licence

sorry when I siad the person who has use of it, I should have said person or persons, as per the TV licence t & c's

if a landlord provides a TV the tenants are responsible for the licence, that is what I was getting at, sorry if that wasn't clear

Moved from askaboutlaw
Askaboutlaw is for legal issues not covered in another forum.
If you search for "tv licence" there are many threads on the topic already

I rent and own my tv so I pay the fee.

I did live in a house where a TV was supplied and the lardlord charged for the licence by the month.

If you already have a licence, then you have to renew it. If not, then wait until pressure is brought to bear on you to do so. The ads are there to frighten you and coerce you into buying one but hang out for as long as you can

We rent an apt and we never got around to getting a licence I think you are more likely to get a knock on the door if you live in a house, when we get a house I am defo getting it !
