Hi All

I would like to try a change in career but I'd like to keep my old job open.

So If I manage to get a years un-paid break from work.
Can I work somewhere else in ireland.
if this new career is not working out , can I take up my previous job again?

I haven't heard of anyone doing this apart from maybe teachers during there summer break .
Does anyone know if I can hedge my bets in such a way and will I still haveall my years service when I take up the old job again?

cheers

May depend on the specific contract of employment and the rules governing the career break? Difficult to answer in general terms.

As far as I know with career breaks for instance in the civil service you cannot take up alternative paye employment but you can work for yourself e.g if you wanted to set up your own business.

I'm just about to take a break myself - its very specific on the terms of contract i.e. i'm not allowed take up apid work within the same industry in Ireland but it will vary from Company to Company

In regards to public sector career breaks, in theory you are not supposed to take up alternative paid employment, in practice it happens all the time.

In private sector however, I can imagine working for a competitor in the same industry whilst on career break would be frowned upon.

The OP did mention though that she wants to try a career change so the competitor issue shouldn't be much of a problem...Let us know what ur company says!
