Quick question for those in the know

As the title says, if an employee goes on maternity leave, is the employer still obliged to make a monthly contribution to the employee's pension scheme or is it at their discretion?

The employment is the Private Sector

The employee doesn't get paid during maternity (not sure if this matters).

I don't see that an employer is obliged to contribute to an occupational scheme in the first place. Considering that maternity leave is a break of employment I would guess they do not need to. You should check the terms of the scheme.

Yes, covered under the Social Welfare Misc Provisions 2004.
Employer should continue to pay the normal employer contribution and the woman can decide if she wants to contribute her element when she returns or not.
I'm not sure if this applies during the additional 16 week unpaid period though.
