Is a polycarbonate roof on a utility room a bad idea?

Am extending kitchen, which (just extended part) will have a glazed roof, & building new utility room to the side. As the utility room is, well, just a utility room, I was wondering if it might make sense to put a polycarbonate roof on instead of a glazed one.

I don't want to go solid roof with velux windows, as the door from the kitchen to utility will be glazed, specifically with the intention of lots of light coming in from the utillity room which gets sun later in the day that the kitchen doesn't.

But I'm concerned in case I make a decision I regret. I know polycarbonate is more noisy in the rain, but would you hear it through a double glazed door? And are temperature fluctuations very bad?

Would it be better to bite the bullet and pay for glass?

Polycarbonate is only plastic and like all plastics subject to UV degradation over time. If it were me I'd opt for the Velux, a lifetime job.

Thanks Carpenter, I should have made myself clearer, another important reason I don't want a solid roof is because the new utility room will be adjoining the kitchen extension. As the kitchen extension will have a glazed conservatory roof, I would prefer the utility roof to match somewhat. The view from the back garden would look nicer I think.

I guess what I'm really asking is, is it worth paying the extra for glass over polycarbonate?

Same answer- glass is a superior material to polycarbonate, especially for your application. Glass won't age, or discolour in the same way that polycarbonate will and it's a lot easier to maintain.
