Is it possible for an Irish resident to set up a UK bank account without having a postal address in the UK.

I am wary of Irish banks and the euro and want to invest my small amount of savings in sterling.

Also, what is the deal with offshore back accounts and what are the tax implications.

Was just about to ask the same thing. I see BOI in the Isle of Man (boioffshore.com) are offering 3.5% on a 1 year fixed term sterling account

yes, it is possible. Barclays is one bank that you can set up an account with online (mostly). You will have to send them off some proof of address and a few other things but it is reasonably straightforward. You can have your account in euro/stg/USD... I think nationwide may also allow it.
