I've been living in London, UK for the last 18 months. I'm originally from Ireland and had lived all my life there until I moved to London.
I'm in my early to mid 20's and have recently started a private pension. I was asked by my pension provider if I wished to opt-out of my UK state pension. As I intend to return to Ireland in the next 4 - 6 years I was unsure how to respond. Are these payments useless as I currently do not intend to remain in the UK until I'm 65 / pensionable age?
In order to be entitled to a full Irish pension how many years do I need to be in Ireland as a PRSI payee? Or what are the terms? Furthermore, if I do not opt-out would my UK PRSI pension contributions count in anyway towards my Irish State pension under any EU laws / agreements?
As I'm not very knowledgeable on this area all your help would be truly appreciated.
Thanks & Best Regards,
