You can import mp3s from any other source (other music website, ripped from CD, "friends" 
) into iTunes to transfer to your iPod, you're not restricted to buying everything from the iTunes store.
The menu options (from memory!) are
File\Add folder to library (for whole albums)
or
File\Add file to library (for individual songs)
I've used 7digital and HMV before, worth a look.
