Internal door butt hinges

Hello,

Might be a bit difficult to describe this but here goes!
I need to replace some worn 4 inch brass butt hinges on internal doors. The problem is with the location of the 4 holes for the screws on the hinge flaps. The ones I have are staggered right,left,right,left. Every hinge I have seen in a hardware/builders providers shop have the opposite configuration ie. left, right,left, right.
To use these would mean having to fill in the existing holes in the frame and door with dowels or something and re-drill new holes.
Is this situation normal, and was I just very unlucky to get hinges with the "wrong" hole alignment first day? I think we got them in Hickey's in Cork, who sadly are no longer trading.

Looks like you're unlucky - or, in a way you may be lucky.

Think how annoying it would be to get hinges that are staggered as per the existing door but the holes are still in the wrong location!

It looks like you will need to call in a carpenter to hang the door properly for you.
He may need to re-position the hinges in order to do this properly.
This will involve chiselling out the recesses for the hinge plates.
Then you fill the old recesses, prime, paint and make good.

If the building is a protected structure you may need planning permission to do this.

All advice on AAM is remote from the situation and cannot be relied upon as a defence or support - in and of itself - should legal action be taken.
Competent legal and building professionals should be asked to advise in Real Life with rights to inspect and issue reports on the matters at hand.

Don't follow you there. If I could get hinges with the same zig-zag pattern for the 4 screw holes then I could replace the old ones directly with the new ones.
 
Onq means, you better off that they are COMPLETELY different, than being slightly off.

Just to be sure, are you looking at the hinges upside down? :p
 
But sure the existing holes will be covered with the plate on the new hinge and it is much better that you will be screwing in the hinge into fresh holes.

Thanks for the replies. the hinges have the same orientation upside down or not. The holes in the new hinges only cover about half of the existing holes in the door and frame. I'd say I will have to plug the existing holes and then fit the new hinges as if it was a first time fitting.
