Insurance for older cars.

My car is 11. However, unless I had to I wouldn't buy an 8 or 9 year old car. I bought mine when it was approaching it's 5th birthday (like a family member so it is!). I bought this from a BMW main dealer who gave me a comprehensive warranty. The car is a high spec and it had one owner and less than 50k miles on the clock. I paid with cash and have had free motoring since (apart from servicing and minor repairs (about 1,000 euro). Oh, and I own the car too!

Off topic from the PCP thread but @Firefly have you had any bother getting insurance for a car of that age? My car is almost 10 years old and running perfectly. My one concern is that getting insurance may be more difficult as the car ages. Have you found this to be the case?

My wife drives an 03 car and her insurance is about €385 this year. Up from €360. I drive an 05 car and my insurance is €430 up from €370.

My insurance for a 13 yr old car when I renewed in November was €516 with AXA, well up on last year, they said they had to get at least 20% on last years cost. I tried everywhere and could not get a cheaper quote from any that would quote on a car that age, lots wouldn't even quote.

That was for comp cover but third party was only €20 less so not worth giving up for the extra perks like glass breakage and breakdown service.

Driving years with no claims etc so no reason for it to be high.

Thanks for the replies. Good to hear it's possible to get insurance. I believe premiums went up for everyone irrespective of the age of the car.

Hi,

Only saw this now. Didn't have any issues getting insured however the prices were higher at first. I then got a very good quote from Post Insurance (Allianz) that came in at 483 (comprehensive) if I remember correctly.

There was some discussion on the insurance forum a while back debating whether such refusals had to be disclosed when seeking further quotes. No real conclusion, but perhaps something to be aware of.

I wouldn't be declaring them, we never even got into the specifics, simply do you insure cars over 10 yrs old, yes or no. That to me is not a refusal to insure, it's a policy decision on behalf of the insurer as to what market they are targetting.

That's fair enough if you just phone them and ask that question, but if you are filling in the online forms, these are official requests for quotes and records are maintained.

So no change since it hit the 10 year mark?
Mine is just coming 13 years old and unfortunately there has been a general increase in premiums so it's hard to say what factor age (of the car) has played. 495 pa comp with AXA through AIB as the broker. 1.9 TDi

Think it went up for everyone. I assume I will only get insurance on mine if I don't switch.
