Importing Wine From Outside The EU, For Personal Consumption

Hello Everyone,

While enjoying a couple of glasses of vino, in a far away place, I've started to consider shipping some wine back home, to Ireland.

Has anyone shipped wine home, for personal consumption, in recent times and if so, what taxes and import duties, and / or restrictions, did you encounter, please ?

Apart from ensuring that the shipping agent is reliable and I'm insured, are there any other considerations, or worse of wisdom, that spring to anyone's mind ?

Many thanks,

Duty of about €3.70 a bottle + vat on the landed cost (duty, wine and transport)

If it can't travel by road/sea service, this will be very expensive to ship.

And remember, wine always tastes better when on holiday

I suggest that you might consider making your own wine. It is my experience that it is quite possible to make most acceptable wines for 2 to 3 euros / bottle. Search ' wine kits' and take it from there. It is the case, however, that you would be depriving the revenue. Assuming for personal consumption only.

We have visited vineyards in France where the winemaker has offered to ship bottles for us and it wasn’t that expensive. I can’t duty aspects. We had a car with us so just loaded it up.

Worth asking if you find something you really like

If you can buy the wine in question locally in Ireland, NI (or wider UK - or maybe Brexit puts the kibosh on that?), or EU/EEA might that not be more cost effective than importing it yourself?
