Importing a Car from UK

Has anybody gone through the process of buying a car from the UK and importing it to Ireland. What are the tax consequences and practicalities involved??

I bought an NI car many years ago. There is an office down in Dun Laoghaire where you pay the VRT and register the car. Very little fuss involved...

Hi Tom Tom,
I have just imported a car from the uk and will be paying tax on it this week. I found a car on a website in Scotland and got my father (who lives there) to check it out for me. He got it checked out by a mechanic and also ran checks in case it had ever been stolen/in a crash/or had an insurance claim. I brought it over this weekend and will be paying vrt this week probably.
Even with the extra hassle and expense of the travel I will have saved about 2,000 euro.
