I need approximately 3-4 ton of top soil, and after being let down by a local builder and now faced with buying it.

However coming home tonight I see one of my neighbor's has a skip full of top soil outside theirs and there's loads of it.

Question is once I've checked with neighbor, how the hell do I get it 30 houses down ?

I'm not about to wheelbarrow the lot down !!
Any suggestions welcome..
TIA

Straightforward true but the cost of hire of a suitable mini-digger is 250 and the cost of 4 ton delivered is 250........not sure if I should bother...it's just the sight of all that muck

trow the guy driving the skip truck 50,
he should be able to tip out most of it on your front garden or drive
you would have had to shift it from there anyway

Even with the delivery option, you're going to have to spread it somehow.

+1 for the €50 to the truck driver. He should move it for you then.

€250 for a mini-digger seems excessive. I hired a bobcat for €110 + VAT to shift 40 tonnes of gravel 2 weeks ago. Easy to drive too. Well, easier than a mini-ex if you're a novice.

After dropping the driver 50 quid, borrow a few wheelbarrows, buy 2 cases of beer and invite a few friends around....muck party!

If there's an Eastern European (usually Polish) shop in the vicinity, call in and I'll bet you'll find many willing, hard-working people to do the job for a reasonable rate.

Amazingly after a days back breaking digging, we manged to transfer all the excavated soil from mine to where it was needed. Didn't need any in the end, although will top it all up with manure and some good top soil. A very hard day's labour...
