How to remove old masking tape stuck to floor

The room as wooden floors and masking tape was put down more than 2 years ago by previous owner to varnish the skirting boards. We never took it up. I tried to remove it a few days ago but it doent come up. It is like tearing a price sticker off something and it leaves the backing/sticky part still attached. Its all around the border of the room. I have tried soaking it with hot water and also nail varnish remover (!) and no joy.

Any suggestions?

Spray liberally with WD-40 and let it soak through (maybe test that it doesn't damage the varnish first though).
 
Thanks MugsGame, I'll give that a go over the weekend and report back. We have a can of WD40 somewhere.
 
Def Wd-40 will work, but if it doesn't white spirits is very good...again I would patch test it first.
 
What about a hair dryer to melt the glue, or failing that using a blade albeit with a very gentle touch!
 
Use a plastic or wooden spatula to lift a corner of the tape, then use the hair dryer, directing the heat under the tape as you pull. Use white spirit on a non-fluffy rag to deal with any residue on the floor borads. Test a a corner first.
 
Thanks for the suggestions, we have white spirits so I'll try it.
Already tried the blade thing. The glue has almost become one with the floor and a blade doesnt lift it, I can carefully scrape tiny stands off but even that takes ages and I have already scratched the floor :(
 
Try cheap and nasty baby wipes - you would be amazed what they will remove ....

Obviously test first, but IME the cheaper the better.
 
I'd go with the WD40 suggestion myself - it's great stuff, no end to it's uses. Pretty much guaranteed to cause no adverse affects to the wood either.
 
I've used olive oil to remove stickers, masking tape etc. from windows with great success. Might be less harsh on your wooden floor than white spirits.
