There is a small green space between a row of houses on our road in a Dublin housing estate. The housing estate is about 40 years old. Suddenly planning permission has gone up for a 4 bed detached house on it. I assumed this green space was owned by the council. No for sale sign ever went up on this land space. How do you find out who owns this space and when it was sold?

Go into Land Registry Setanta Centre Nassau Street. You can a mapping search. If the lands are registered then the map will connect to a folio number which will indicate owner. If lands are not registered, it may be more problematical. Who is making the application? Could it be the original developer or someone he has sold to? You could also check your own deeds - specifically the planning permissions - is there anything in that about the green space? Finally, should you object to the application? And if so, on what grounds?

Is it fair to assume that the person who applied for permission (and is named on the notice) is the owner of the site?

If the applicant is not the owner the applicant must must submit a letter of consent from the owner with the application. You can check this very easily by viewing the application at the planning office or going on line.........
