How long to hear back after job interview?

We are facing redundancy at the end of the month. One of my colleagues went for an interview in early May(she was the first one to have an interview) and has yet to hear anything back about the particular position.

Does anyone know what is normal procedure in cases like this. She liked the company and felt the interview went well, and is surprised that she was not contacted either way. She is hoping this is not the way it is now, that you go for an interview and they never get back to you.

I think they might have offered someone else the position and are waiting for that person to start before they inform the other candidates, but I dont want to say this to her if its not correct. Anyone work in recruitment or HR and know if this would be the procedure?

There is no fixed procedure. It's best to pick up the phone and call them.

It could be a good sign that she hasn't yet been excluded, and they may indeed being going through reference checks/medicals/offers with other higher-ranked candidates. It is unusual to hear absolutely nothing. I had a call last week from a public body regarding a position that applied for in February telling me that they are short-listing over the next two weeks! No harm in a call or email to check up.
