Just wondering how exactly does cancelling contract with utility company work? Does it for example put a black mark against your name indefinitely or is it just written off after the end of your fixed term which Google would indicate

If you cease to take electricity and gas from Electric Ireland before the end of your Electricity and Gas price plan, we will apply a €50 (incl. VAT) exit fee to your electricity or gas account. After the end of your fixed term, the exit fee clause will cease to apply to your contract.

Black mark where?
Cancelling a utility contract early (and paying any early cancellation fee) isn't like reneging on a loan which is logged with the CCR.
It's just a normal transaction between customer and utility provider.
End of story.

The only effect cancelling early (from any provider, not just EI) will be a exit fee. If you cancel after a contract expires then there is no exit fee.
Thats all.
