Get you self a top class solicitor, Doctor, Accountant or financial adviser.

How do you source one of these.

Do you go for the most expensive, one that has celebrity status, One that hasnt been struck off of their profession yet, word of mouth etc.

Im sure recent news about professionals being struck off, were considered top class in their field before being struck off, and if not, what list were they missing from.

If some one asks me to get a top class Accountant, is there a place I can go to acquire such a list, does that also mean the person not on the list is not at the top of their game.

I have use the service of an accountant for a number of years, she is very reasonable, a lot cheaper than I have been quoted for previously, have recommended her to friends, maybe she is a top accountant, but dosent have that title over her door, so I cant recommend her as a top class Accountant,

So when some one says get your self a Good Doctor, a Good Accountant etc, your left saying, crikey, how do I know their good, as opposed to bad.

The recent solicitors case reported in the papers, although not struck off as yet, and previously, where some well known who were struck off, were they on a list of people to avoid?

A few thing, not many, but a few things annoy me in life, having a title of Landlord if you happen to let out any kind of property, and getting a Good Doctor-Accountant-solicitor etc..

Just shooting the Breeze, Back to work for me.

Part of the problem with good is that it's a subjective term, and can mean different things to different people. Another challenge is that some of the professions you mention cover a very broad range, so for example a solicitor that is very good on conveyancing might not be so hot om employment or family law. Then of course, these people are all people. How many of us could say we never have an off day?

Very true Leo, I consider my self good at what I do, but I have had days when, I just should have stayed at home!!

Odyssey,

Are you trying to push me over the edge...

It's a tricky one, the best guidance I can give is:

1. Be realistic about your requirements. Do you require someone 'top notch' or someone who'll 'mind you'. Hot shots don't do minding. Minders should know their limits and refer on for specialist stuff. So the person who does bookkeeping may not be the best person to give you estate planning advice - its like a surgeon, you dont jump from heart to brain to knee.
2. Get someone in your "strata" - if you're a big Irish company you need a top 10 firm. If you're a hairdresser the local lad over the butchers should be fine, and the price will be real world.
3. Personal recommendations/'colour of their eyes' - if they're arrogant types they're either really good or just ......not very nice people. If you don't like them don't deal with them (unless they're literally the oracle for whatever you're specifically after - so you dont have to love your brain surgeon but if you cant communicate with your solicitor then what are you still doing there).

It reminds me of the line "What do you call the person who came last in their class in medical school?" ... "Doctor"

That person came last may turn out the best of them all may be more interesting in the job ,
some of the others may turn out to be box tickers with a bit of paper to show they can tick a box,

Not only are doctors "Professionals" but they are also "Front Line Staff". They are in two of the most important categories of people there are!
Therefore none of them are anything than overworked, underpaid, dedicated and selfless professionals struggling against a heartless monolithic HSE run by greedy, lazy, overpaid, underworked Administrators and (worst of all) Managers, just like all other "Front Line Staff" (Nurses, Gardai, Teachers, etc.).

Get with the programme for god's sake!

Edit; They are "Passionate" as well. I don't know how I could have forgotten about that. My humble and contrite apologies to all of those fine people.
