How do I install graphics and sound cards?

I have a Dell and recently had to reformat it. Since I got it back, I have installed the sound cd but there is still no sound. I have the connections right and it says that it is working ok. It is an on board sound card. Also, I have the NVidia graphics card and it has not automatically detected the hardware? I cant see in the cd's if there is software for launching it. Is there a way I can have it detected? thanks a mil
