How can we start a pension while we are overseas?

We've been employed on a contract type assignment abroad for the past 10 years. We have accumulated some cash and property.

We have a chance to work abroad once again but now want to look at pension options for when we return to Ireland.

What are the options available to us regarding Irish pensions.

We would intend to be living back in Ireland within the next 10 years or so.

Re: How can we start a pension

I am assuming from what you say that you are not tax resident in Ireland? Then you should not start a pension.

The attraction of a pension scheme is that you get tax relief on your contributions. If you don't get tax relief, then they are not appropriate. You would be paying income tax on the payments from the pension scheme when you retire!

Depending on where you work, you may be able to get tax relief on the contributions in that country. If you are in a low tax or no tax country, then you should not be saving through a pension scheme.
