hi folks, i am trying to trace an ip address that a site administrator posted.

a poster was making very personal comments on a local forum and as such was removed and his ip address posted.

i need to know how to trace it

You will be able to trace it a ISP or possibly a company... but thats about it without court orders...

i think they've laready given the isp.

what i ws given is xx-xx-xx-xxx.b-ras2.blp.dublin.eircom.net

(the x's represent the numbers that i don't want to post here

Its a court order from there I am afraid...

If the thing posted was libel then follow up with a solicitor.... if not then give up....

That's an IP address taken from a pool of addresses when the user's ADSL modem connects. The "b-ras2.blp.dublin.eircom.net" bit refers to a broadband remote access server and literally tens of thousands of users from multiple exchanges connect to it. Each time they connect by turning on their modem they're likely to get a different IP address.

The bottom line is you need to have the IP address and an accurate verifiable timestamp at which it was used. You'll then need to get a court order so that Eircom look up in their RADIUS server logs which DSL line was using that IP address at the time. ISPs are now forced to [broken link removed] that data for three years. That may not be the end of the story as if it was used by a business with multiple computers or a computer with multiple users you'll need to trace those logs too if they exist.
