How can I cut through old metal window bars? (No, I'm not a burglar!)

Hi,

I want to remove about 10 very old metal (iron, I think) security bars from the outside of a window and attach an Eircom Homewatch alarm sensor to the inside instead. I need to take out the individual bars, because the bottom part of the frame (rail) is helping to support some very old railings. (Sounds ugly I know, but it's not actually!) Does anyone know if there is an easy way to remove individual bars that are less than an inch thick? When I looked online, there was a suggestion that bolt cutters might work. Or am I talking about hiring an expensive and dangerous tool of some kind?

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Small angle grinder. Pick one up cheap enough in argos, probably cheaper in lidl or aldi..
