House Alarm

Just moving into house, which has a Telecom (remember that) alarm system in place.

I got quoted a figure of about 1100 from Eircom for installation of an upgrade and monitoring system.

Does anyone know if this is OTT, ok, or whether there are other options which might be cheaper.

Also, should the landlord have to ok the installation or indeed pay for it (the advertisement clearly stated that the house had an alarm).

Any info welcome.

What do you mean by upgraded? What functionality is there at the moment? Should be some sort of alarm or else your landlord should address as per his ad.

Also, do you need it monitored? If so, you could have a text dialler added to text you when alarm is triggered. Cheaper than a monitored solution.

Pretty sure that's standard enough installation fee but as the other poster says you can discuss the alarm as per the landlord's ad but he's not really obliged to pay 1100 for an alarm, I mean that's a lot of money. If you really require an alarm (which you may well do) maybe you should consider finding a different place or paying for the installation yourself (which i wouldn't do myself but you might be willing) with the landlord's permission.

I know nothing about house alarms, having never had one. The house has a Telecom Phonewatch box etc. inside. Eircom said it was obsolete and required an upgrade.

Well you just pass that information onto your landlord and if he wants to upgrade the alarm then fair enough away he goes, if not then are you happy to live in a house with no alarm?

Be aware that you also have to pay a yearly service charge and also a monitoring fee. Parts, labour included vary so check the details.

I think that if you upgraded the alarm system without the landlord's permission/knowledge then you should be the one to pay for it. An upgrade may not have been necessary and you shouldn't expect the landlord to pay for it if a functioning alarm system was already in place.

That alarm would not be up to today's standards so you would need it upgraded if you where to be getting it monitored. It needs to be able to give the monitoring station a verified alarm signal.

In relation to the op`s question, if the alarm works then the landlord has no obligation to install or upgrade the alarm that is there. If the alarm does not work then he has to get it fixed. If it cant be fixed then he will have to upgrade the alarm or else get a new alarm installed.
