I have done business studies at college.

I get on well with others, I am thinking of career prospects in the hotel sector.

Is it as bad as they say - long hours & bad pay?

I'd probably have to start at an entry level type job - eg. barman, porter or waiter.

I did accounts in the hotel industry.

You could try to get into it by doing accounts. At least you would have regular hours and no weekend work. The pay is not great but the experience is very good, particularly if you like dealing with people and want to move into hotel management.

The bar and reception work have unsocial hours and low pay. If you don't mind shifts 7 to 3 and 3 to 11pm you could go into reception, and progress to Front Office Manager.

I would advise you to try to get reception/accounts in a hotel, and see if you like it. Then, at least if you don't like it, the reception/accounts experience would be useful in getting an office job in another company. If you do like it, try to get to be duty manager. A lot of people like this work, as it is very varied.

For what it's worth, this thread may be of interest.

I worked plenty in hospitality when I was younger and I liked it. However, not something I'd like to make a career of longer term.

Back again without a job & again thinking of the hotel sector.

Bar work seems to have long hours.

Are porter or waiter jobs hard going?

How would future employers react?

Have you looked into them trainee management programs hotels run with some of the institutes of technology whereby you spend most of your time working in the hotel and then block release in the colleges for a few months/weeks here and there? So you get a higher qualification plus lots of varied work experience
