Home insurance 2025 post storm Eowyn

Some insurers are vague saying only that they may not pay out a claim if the alarm was not in use. I doubt if they could refuse a large claim in its entirety but usually I would forgo the discount and say no alarm to be on the safe side.
Insurance companies aren't noted for paying where they don't have to. Zurich do seem to be more reasonable with the €500 deduction though, others just state it must be set and maintained.

happy to take the alarm discount and I also got a discount for increased excess.
Personally speaking I've never found the alarm discount to be worth the expense of installing and maintaining.
The discount for a higher excess is a good way of knocking off a few euros and a small deterrent for claims that should be handled by the policy holder.

Not to mention that many (unmonitored) house alarms are going off for ages before anybody bothers to investigate and that's usually just annoyed neighbours. I suppose they may be a deterrent but I sometimes wonder about that too. Haven't had one in 30+ years and the one attempted break-in was thwarted by physical security measures.

I didn't get an alarm installed so I could get a home insurance discount.
I have an alarm to deter break ins and for the security of my family.
I am happy paying for the installation and maintenance of my alarm.

@Des Pondent
I never said you did, I was just referring to my own experience and if I was to upgrade the alarm system that was in my house when I bought it back in 1998

For pig iron, how much of a discount did you get for having an alarm
And how much do you pay to have it serviced every year??

It’s irrelevant. Personally the main reason I have the alarm is to deter break ins and for security. I know the small savings I might make on insurance will go nowhere remotely near the cost of installing and maintaining an alarm.

Just to give you all an update. I will have to get a loan to fix my roof, as my insurance company will not cover the cost. In the meantime, this morning, I received my home insurance renewal, which falls for renewal in July.
My question to you posters out there, is, could anyone give me a solid reason why I should pay a premium to a company, who will not cover me for storm damage?

Because you need insurance cover for a lot more than just storm damage. Plus, you are not obliged to stick with the same insurer and are free to shop around for cover elsewhere.

I can fully understand how your feeling at the moment, I think most of us would be annoyed if we were in your shoes
Is there any chance you could appeal the insurance companies decision??
Could you get an independent assuror to give his opinion as to whether the damage should be covered under your policy??

With regards to house insurance going forward, I think you'd be foolish not to have cover for what is probably your most expensive asset
If you still have a mortgage on the property I'm sure it's in the T&Cs that the property is fully insured while there's a mortgage attached

As Mr Clubman advises above you always have the option to change insurers but I'm not sure if you'd have to notify them of this,
As in did you make a claim on your current policy and have it turned down ??
