Hey guys,

Looking for some guidance re health insurance for newbies. Myself (34), my wife (37) and our 18 month old and a bump due shortly looking to take out insurance with a good level of day to day and good general cover re private hospitals. I have tried comparing policies however due to sheer volume don’t know where to start. All in good health in general and are active. Travel insurance would be useful but not necessity as we can purchase separately Any advice or guidance re recommended policies to look at would be really welcomed.

Thanks in advance!

Note; As your wife is 37 years of age, there will be a 6% loading applied to her premium every year. This is called LCR Lifetime Community Rating.
A 2% loading applies for every year a person is over 34 years of age. This is 3 years in your wifes case 3 x 2% = 6%.
Lifetime Community Rating is explained here.

If you take out a health insurance policy before the baby is born, the new baby will be covered on the policy free of charge until renewal date 2020.
Maternity will not be covered on the plan as there is a 1 year wait before cover applies.

Child Options
Public hospital cover is sufficient cover for a child under 3 years of age, as there are no private hospitals in Ireland. The 3 hi-tech hospitals offer a
range of paediatric surgery for children age 3 plus. VHI are best priced for a public hospital only plan.
1. VHI PublicPlus Care plan; price 129pa; all public hospitals covered. No private hospitals covered on this plan.

2. Irish Life Nurture Plan; price 170pa; a selected list of public and private hospitals covered on this plan. Please check the list covered to make
sure they suit your location. The 3 childrens hospitals in Dublin are covered.

3. Laya Assure Protect; price 156pa; all public hospitals covered on this plan. No private hospitals covered.
