Health Insurance Health insurance options for older people?

Hi, my parents are in their late 70s/early 80s. My Dad has just told me that, after being a VHI customer for 40 or 50 years (loyalty, how are you), his VHI insurance is now c. €4000 for both of them. He paid it, saying he has no choice and that no other company would take them. I find this very hard to believe, and I won't say what I think of the company called VHI. My parents are not rich, but they are afraid after a lifetime of blessed health (which VHI has profited from) that they will need health insurance more than ever now.

What options do they have in terms of insurance? Thank you.

Hi Aodhan,

Firstly, your parents have 14 days after renewal date, to change their mind regarding the policy or company they are with at the moment.
They are entitled to change to a different company or to a different plan regardless of their age or health conditions etc, without penalty.

A couple of alternative plans worth considering as follows;
1. VHI Company Plan Extra Level 3; 1480per person
2. LAYA Company Care Plus; 1451per person

When is their renewal date and what plan are they on at the moment?
