I have Sky digital, live in an appartment and we have communal satelite dish and only 1 connection coming from the dish. While I realise I need 2 for full functionality, really the reason i want a Sky+ box is for recording. I can buy a 2nd hand one on ebay but just wondering if it will work? Does it require a special card or anything like that or can I put my existing viewing card into a Sky+ box and it will work away happily? I'm not subscribed to Sky sports or movies if that makes a difference.

Thanks,
Pat.

You will need to pay extra (think is €10) if you don't have movies and sport...

as far as I know the card is associated with the box, but maybe you could ring up Sky and tell them your using a different box now and can they match your existing card to the new box?

You will also need at least a dual LNB on the dish as well & a second cable run to your reciever.

Actually this has changed - a standard subscription will allow the use of SKY+ now. I know as I'm getting it in next month woohoo! No more fighting! :)

As you've only 1 satellite feed into your apartment, then Sky+ isn't gonna work fully. You'll not have the ability to record one channel and record another for example. AFAIK, with just one feed, you will be able to record the channel you're watching, or timer a recording as long as the box is in Standby.

Would it be at all possible to get another satellite feed from the headend that's feeding the apartments?

There is no extra fee for SKy+ functionality. You will need to ring Sky to pair your card to the new box, and turn on the recording feature.

On a related issue, we recently upgraded to a Sky+ box from a standard Sky box. We now have the original Sky box and remote in our possession, doing nothing.

Anyone know the correct way to get rid of it?

You'll get about €30-€40 on ebay for it :D

You can get that Sky box connected up in a different room for an extra €15 per month (plus an installation fee). I was offered the option when I upgraded to Sky +. I might do it eventually...

Thanks for the replies. We were offered multi-room connection but turned it down. There's one TV in the house and that's how it's going to stay!

Had a look at eBay - that's where it will go. I wasn't sure about this as I didn't know whether I owned or just rented the hardware with the Sky package. But I suppose the fact that Sky never took the old one away should have given me a clue.

Quick semi-related question:

Have Sky digital at the moment and thinking of upgrading to Sky+. I know that for Sky+ you need 2 cables from the dish to the box. Can someone confirm if they are both the same? i.e is it just a second cable the same as the regular Sky cable that gets connected?

Thanks.

I presume that the two cables are separate feeds from a dual/twin LNB setup on the dish so would both be satellite coaxial? Don't you also need the phone line connected to the box or something?

Clubman, is the "must have phone line connected" the same as for regular Sky digital, i.e it still works with it diconnected?

If you are getting Sky+ installed you can pay not to have the phone line connected and the installation engineer will do a 'manual install'. This costs a once-off €37.50.
