interesting post, we have a similar situation in work. we have issued a warning to an incompetent employee and have been reviewing his work on a daily basis, his job title is 'Senior Operations Manager' he is not totally useless but he should be a 'Junior Operations Manager', can we cut his pay and give him a new title, what are the legalities around this?
 
You generally can't change an employee's salary/terms/conditions unilaterally, i.e. without agreement.
