Hi, any advice or opinions on this subject would be appreciated. Windows are going to be key in the house design we've been approved for - as there is a great deal of glazing both in 'standard' window format, french and patio doors and full-height glazing to one gable.

I want to go down a wooden route (from a visual point of view) even though I know there will be more upkeep and it will cost more. And I really want to talk to a company who not only competent in their product provision but who are also enthusiastic about how windows can add to the design of a house (rather than being something just to hold sheets of glass in!!)

Be great to get a few opinions on this. Thanks for for help

Two separate sets of friends of ours used Marvin when they were building in the last few years - they were happy with the product and service.

Although they dont all do hardwood I have sent off information requesting quotes to the following companys and will then try to narrow it down to two thereafter.

We just had our windows delivered on Sunday. They are mahagony wood sash windows. We got them from hillcrest in Claudy Derry. I have say although bias they are fabulous. www.hillcrestgroup.co.uk. We found them great to deal with even had the windows delivered a week before schedule, we spent months looking at various window companies eventully went with these.

Just looking through a Brooks Hardwoods & Softwoods brochure and they have a section about each type of wood and the durability of it for outdoor use in Joinery. I thought that it may be of interest to those looking to purchase Hardwood Joinery for their homes.

Hardwoods:
Iroko (teak) is classed as High/Very High
Framire (teak) is classed as Moderate/Durable
Sapele (mahoganny) is classed as Moderate
White Oak is classed as High
Red Oak is classed as Non-durable
Cherry is classed as Non-durable

Softwoods:

Whitewood/Spruce is classes as - can be treated with timber preservative to prolong service life
Redwood/Scots Pine is classed as Non-durable
Douglas Fir is classed as Moderately Durable
Southern yello Pine is classed as Moderate
Western Red Cedar is classed as Durable

I know Iroko would be the one that I would be asking for.

Do you mind me asking how you are faring out with your Hillcrest Joinery windows? I am in final negotiations with them and would love to hear some feedback from an independent source?

did you go with Hillcrest at the end? I got some windows from them for my house, but, i've been having some problems with them, just wondering how your faring out
