Hard Water: Any cheap work arounds or do we have to buy a water softner for circ €500

Hi,

We have hard water in our house, leaves the kettle in an awful state when you boil it.Are they any cheap ways of getting around this or do we have to buy one of these and get it fitted?

I have the same problem and have to descale the kettle, shower hose and iron regularly. I also put tablets into the washing machine periodically to reduce potential damage there.....

Bought a new kettle recently (one of the see through ones!)....Its scarey to see how quickly the build up occurs! Descaling does the trick though!

I would be more concerned about heating system than the kettle ! A kettle is cheap to replace ! I also have a hard water problem and would like to hear from anyone who reckons they have it solved !

We live in a Hard water area too and we got one of these

No problems with kettles, washing machines, showers since. 7 euro about every 6 weeks for a bag of salt and that thingy does the rest.

have seen a kit containing magnets that you wrap around pipes in b&q or atlantic homecare a while back ,cant remember which shop. are these thing any good for this problem

There are some previous threads on water softeners which might give some advice.

Isn't it water softeners that some companies do the hard sell on? Might have been discussed in some of those previous threads.

The long-term solution is to switch to rain-water. I am doing this at the moment - lots of problems to be overcome but lots of fun. I'll report back on the success, or otherwise, shortly.

Isn't it water softeners that some companies do the hard sell on?

Some companies may "hard sell" water softners but the really aggressive pushy ones sell RO Reverse Osmosis systems.


It is always worth while getting your water tested by an independant laboratory before embarking on expensive treatment solutions.


OP does your water come from a private well or is it a public or group scheme (mains water)?
