Do employers in general pay this in Ireland for long service. I assume if I resign my position there is no onus on an employer to pay anything. The question I am asking is does it generally happen?

I never heard of it so I wouldn't bank on receiving anything apart from.your final salary and remaining holiday pay.

Perhaps its referred to as ex gratia, I know it certainly exists but obviously it must not be very common.

You might get a nice piece of crystal and a meal out but I wouldn't bank on any chunk of money. :) I have never come across anyone getting a lump sum on leaving other than in a redundancy situation.
