Hi I am a postgrad student who has just finished studying and is now looking for a permanent job, so far all i can find is non paid work experience as a foot in the door. Can anyone tell me what benefits if any I am entitled to? I was thinking about trying to claim the Dole but I haven't a clue how to even go about it. I was working full time for a yr before I left to concentrate on my studies, I managed to claim my tax back but now i am not sure what I am entitled to. Hope someone can help me out there.

Cheers
Aisling

Re: graduated but no job!!

Have you checked the Welfare and sites?

If you can't find paid employment in your field of study then why not look for work in other areas even tangentially or not at all related to your specialised field - even for the moment?

Have you asked your college to assist with finding potential employers/jobs?

Re: graduated but no job!!

hey thanks for getting back to me, I am in work experience that the university organised for me and i am contracted to the placement for 2 months. I have tried to get a saturday job/bar work but no joy as i think employees think i won't work for minimum wage. i have a loan to pay off so i am beyond the point of being fussy i think.

Re: graduated but no job!!

If you have a loan to pay off then you really want to be working rather than on the dole as the maximum you'll get on the latter (excluding additional benefits/allowances) is c. €160 p.w. Are you being paid in the current placement? Is there any scope for an extension of the contract/placement? If not and you can't find any suitable work in your area of specialisation then you most likely need to start looking at other areas. What is your qualification? What are the job prospects like both in your location, nationally and further afield (UK, EU, US etc.)?

Re: graduated but no job!!

To echo Clubman, if opportunities for employment are not materialising here in Ireland - you might consider looking elsewhere in the EU.

2006 is European Year for Worker Mobility and EURES the european job mobility portal provides information on jobs (i.e., vacancies) across the EU, together with information on your rights and entitlements as an EU national in other member states.

The jobs on the EURES site are advertised by each member state and interestingly, you can even search each country by region. [broken link removed].

By the way I have no involvement in the EURES site. (Just thought it might be of assistance if you are considering looking abroad).

Have yu tried dumbing down the CV a bit? Does a bar manager need to know you have a PhD in Waffle/Arts?!

thanks guys.they are all avenues that i have thought about and will continue to look into.
i only want to claim the Dole for the 2mths that i am in my placement and then i was intending to look for fulltime work and the chances are that my work placement will turn into a permanent job just need a bit of cash to help me survive till then.
im going to apply for it anyhow and keep looking for a sat job as i wana save as much cash as poss during the summer so i will keep the part time work up even when i find full time job.
My postgrad is in Advertising and it is a real word of mouth industry and i have been working in other roles since my degree that i hated, so thats why i went back to get the qualification.
cheers again

You will not be available for work while in placement so don't meet one of the fundamental qualification criteria for Unemployment Benefit/Assistance.

cool. that was what i wanted to know really.

cheers for that guys, it was just a thought to keep the bank manager happy guess i'll just have to drawl the internet for part time jobs. but esp thanks for the info on finding jobs in European countries totally up my avenue.

njoy your day
