Going on maternity leave -Should we get jointly assessed

Hi,

Hope someone can help with my query. I am going on maternity leave mid December and plan to return to work after 26 weeks. My salary is 47k and my OH is 52K. We are currently assessed separately for tax purposes.

I will not receive payment from my company while on maternity leave so will receive 230 from state.

My question is should we combine our tax credits or is there any point?

If you are married to OH it would be better to be jointly assessed but if single you don't have a choice

Thanks for your reply Black sheep. Yes we are married. Will I end up paying more tax in July when I return to work if we are jointly assessed..to cover maternity benefit tax.

I havn't a clue how it is worked out and Revenues website is as clear as mud.

Do you know how much better off we would be if we got jointly assessed?
