Getting rid of smell in kitchen after oil leak?

My ex had an heating oil leak in the boiler house which is adjacent to kitchen wall. There is a strong smell of oil now in the kitchen, and the kitchen unit beside the wall next to boiler house is stained. I understand that it can be a major problem to get rid of this smell which may involve ripping out kithcen units, chipping away plaster, etc.. Anybody have any ideas of less drastic action that could be tried before going this route?
 
you can try some scented talc powder, but this does tend to only mask a small spill.
 
Think it'll take more than that but thanks! I'd be worried about health issues with the fumes from the oil. I'm toldf they're notoriously difficult to get rid off.
 
If there was Insurance in effect at the property, you should be able to use the services if an expert firm to deal with this matter.
 
Dont overlook this - It is a very serious issue. The hydrocarbons if present at very high levels can be lethal. Get it checked out by the proffesionals. Your insurance should cover everything. I know a family that had to evacuate their house for months as the fumes were a health hazard and the whole floors in the house had to be dug up and chemically treated!!

Yep, that's the sort of story I'm hearing too from others! Guess I'll get them to report it to the insurance company first and see wha/who they recommend.
