Gas Fire / Natural Fire Conversion

Hi,
Does anyone know where to start in converting a gas fire to a natural fireplace?
Its a cottage that the previous owner put a gas fire in front of the fireplace that was there - I am guessing it's just the cavity thats there and not much else.
If we're looking for a quote on converting it back who do we contact? a general handyman?
Any idea how much we're looking at. I think the previous owner mentioned that there may be a 'down draft', is this 'fixable' and at what cost?
many thanks

You may need to get a draft test/smoke test done.
You can get a fan assisted flue if down draft is an issue.
It depends on the type of gas fire installed.
You really need to have it looked at by a heating Engineer.
Generally its not a big issue.
But do have it looked at, a gas trained and qualified fitter can do this.
He will need to de-comission the gas service and issue you with a cert of compliance.
