Gas boiler problem or water problem?

Hi, I was hoping someone could help me with a problem I'm having! I have gas central heating which was working fine until a few days ago. To turn on the heat I just adjust a temperature setting to above what the current room temperature is and the heat usually comes on, and the boiler would come on when I do this.
However, for the past couple of days I can't get the heat to turn on. The fan icon on the temperature panel where I adjust to temperature to turn on the heat comes on, as if the heat is on, but the radiators are staying cold.

The boiler has been v quiet over the last couple of days but has come on occasionally. Do I need to get the boiler serviced? Or is it a problem with the radiatiors?

I have a separate issue with my water - often, when I turn on the hot tap nothing comes out. in order to get hot water running again I tend to flush the toilet repeatedly and leave a tap on the bathroom and then the water tank makes a bit gurgling noise and hot water comes back. Just wonedering if this might be related to the heating not working? Are the radiators linked to the tank?

Any help would be appreciated because Bord Gais aren't coming out to me till next Friday! Thanks.

Hi,

Your room thermostat acts as a switch for your boiler. The room stat seems to be working so your problem is at the boiler.

your hot and cold water is seperate so I don't think flushing toilet would help flow. Although I will give it more thought. I think that your hot water line is getting air locked and by letting a hot tap open you are freeing out the air. If it happens alot it is probably a system fault and would need to be inspected.

If you have a mixer bath tap with shower attachment it is quite easy to free air locks.

Bord Gais will only look at the boiler and will not look at anything non gas related. I would suggest you get a RGI plumber to have a look over your system.

Thanks for the feedback Davy Jones! I'm not overly worried about my water problem at the moment - though the washing machine has given up on me too, and won't drain water, guess this is just bad luck tho and not related to my water problem! No water coming out of hot tap is happening more regularly now, every couple of days i'd say. I know the neighbours had a similar problem.

For the boiler, do you think I should cancel bord gais and get a plumber instead?

I would not call Bord Gais directly but would pick an installer off their website in your area, so yes I would cancel. If the problem with the boiler is an external control, zone valve, room stat etc. BG will tell you to get a plumber.

So check out the BG website and get a RGI (registered gas installer) who is also a plumber. Most of them are. and you will probably have them visit you before friday!

hi Lucy rgi serviceman here. Sounds as if you may have a fAulty zonevalve I. Ur hotpress easy fix and get ur boilrserviced at the same time may save u a few bob in the pRocess

Get a service engineer to service your boiler and have a look at your system, plumbers only will look at the boiler more than likely, a service engineer will look at you system aswell as giving you your boiler efficiency, he will also recommend if improvement in your system can be made.
