Garden advice

Hi,

I am looking for some advice about the grass in my back garden. My back garden isnt level some parts are slightly higher than others.

I was thinking of just getting top soil and racking it over the parts that are lower down to make the garden level. Someone advised me to rotovate the full garden then level it all out adding top soil.

If I did the above the garden would be out of use for the next while, I was thinking adding a bit of top soil and seed to the areas that are slightly lower might work and save hassle of rotovating the whole garden.

Tried this myself earlier this year and it worked well. If you do it now the grass growth should be quick and you may only need to stake off those areas of the ground that are re-seeded. make sure to compact the new sil down well as otherwise it will subside over time.

how much have to raise the low areas? it would cost alot if you underestimate the volume involved... i got a guy inwith a machine to level my back yard and it was great to see him do all that work really fast... it'd take me ages witha barrow... pity he broke up the drive way coming in however!!

if you do rotovate it, you should roll the garden aswell to keep it even.. you can rent the rollers from a tool hire place for about €20/€25 for the day... just fill with water... it all depends on the amount of the garden that you need to bring up to be level...if very deep, use some garden sand aswell, roll that... then top soil on that... & sher "roll that" aswell... over time the garden does settle.... so you might need a "top up" later...
