I am meeting the owner of the small construction company next week with a view to doing the book keeping/VAT/admin work for the company. It is likely they will want me to work as a contractor with no employee obligations for them. If this is the case what would be reasonable to ask as an hourly rate? I would have been hoping to get 15 euro/hour as an employee. What are the advantages/disadvantages to me/them? What should I steer them towards if I can?
I have no other income at the moment but would hope to get more of this type of freelance work.

I understood (am open to correction) that it is actually up to the Revenue to decide whether a person is an employee or self-employed. The Code of Practice for Determining Employment or Self-Employment Status of Individuals (pdf here: [broken link removed]) sets out the criteria (and consequences) which may help you. If you are doing this sort of work for more than one business that would certainly help confirm self-employed status.

Hi Treetiger
Firstly when do you think that he the employer wants you as a contractor rather that an employee. Is this for him to save money on paying you hols etc. Aslo if you are contracting yourself out then you will have to consider your self as self employed. Is this employer just wanting someone short term and will be paying you cash in hand?

Sorry my reply was meant for the original poster and not Tree Tiger. Would also agree with mercman on the pay issue.
