foundation Spec

Hello all,
I'm about to do a self build extension/sun room. Does anyone one know the required spec for a foundation or where to get this information.
I hope to do one of these passive solar rooms so what is the spec for the insulation in the foundation and at what point does it go in?

Paddyboy, all due respect, ask your engineer. Do not start any form of selfbuild without an engineer specifying your foundations and full working drawings from an architect or you are asking for trouble.

If you need help at this stage do you really think it is wise to selfbuild?

Just looking for the latest spec with regard to ground insulation, etc?
its a sun room, not the twin towers I'm building- all due respect.

foundation specification is specific to ground conditions....

any advice without knowing the soil conditions is moot..

Hitting rock. 12 to 18 inches below serface. Shale to solid.
Found some great publications on the SEi web site, very helpful.

I'd be surprised if you're hitting rock that high so close to your house.

Sconhome and sydthebeat are telling it like it is.

There is a useful motto in the building industry.

"Stick to what you're good at!"

You'd better read up on the Building Regulations in relation to adding conservatories, - several regs cover it, Parts B, L and F at least.

It shouldn't obscure the only final exit or make one out of two required final exits into a passage through another room - Part B, I think.

You can't have it connected to the house heating and it must be capable of being closed off from the rest of the house - Part L, I think.

You should read and understand the section about ventilating rooms through them [external rooms], particularly how the ope sizes relate - Part F, I think.

Also you should reall get somoene competent to look at the house plan and spec vs the sun path.

Conservatories can overheat the house unless both they and the house are sited, ventilated, shielded and detailed properly.

Ending up with a non-compliant house will come back to bite you at sell on.

As you seem to imply, building a conservatory isn't rocket science.

Dowever, designing and building it compliantly is beyond most laypeople.

You'll be offering Opinions on Compliance and doing the Conveyacing next!

Chers onq,
I worked the building industry for twelve years but have moved into something different in the last few years so would be quiet confident in taking on a sun room. The latest spec in insulation etc is what I'm basically looking for.
The hope is to make the room self contained from a heating point of view, not too unlike the passive solar concept. Any advice apreciated?

Paddyboy, you could go for a complete insulated foundation raft where you use EPS100 to form an insulated form with 150 - 300mm layered EPS on you man foundation slab area directly on top of your DPM, on blinding on hardcore.
You could buy the sheets directly from Aeroboard or Quinn and cut to form your own foundations.
You still need independent advice on the foundation spec re soil conditions etc. to ensure compliance and to avoid potential problems in the future for sale or otherwise.
