In this section you have to give the total amount of assets acquired , the assets are split into different types, shares , property etc.

Im only concerned with shares purchased in a given year. My question is should I only enter the net shares purchased as most of the share purchases were done from the proceeds from selling other shares. Therefore if i enter the total purchases without deducting the value of shares sold the figure looks exaggerated as i havnt acquired much additional shares just change the shares owned in that year

You enter the amount of your purchases.

Presumably, the proceeds of the share sales will figure in the CGT return

Yes, agree with jpd. I've put large sums in for shares purchased, even though it's just the same money being recycled through numerous transactions and the net is only a fraction of the amount.
